DINING
Outdoor dining is a pleasant part of the
Greek lifestyle, since, for the most part of the year, weather conditions are
mild and there is a lot of sunshine. You can enjoy traditional Greek tastes in
the numerous small "tavernas", family operated in their majority, which offer
their Mediterranean cuisine often in unpretentious but friendly settings.
Famous local dishes include "moussaka" (a ground meat and eggplant
casserole), "yemista" (tomatoes and peppers stuffed with rice and herbs),
"yuvetsi" (meat with pasta served in a clay dish) and a variety of home-made
pies like spinach, cheese or zucchini.
The Greek equivalent of fast-food is
"souvlaki", the most popular version of which is "pita-yiros", meat wrapped in
an Arabic pita with a yogurt and garlic sauce called "tzatziki". Seaside
tavernas serve fresh fish and seafood with views to the sea, while the national
aperitif is "ouzo", which you can sip accompanied by tasty appetizers in cafes
and tavernas.
NIGHTLIFE
A popular style of Athenian
entertainment is bouzoukia, large clubs where live bouzouki music is played and
the atmosphere is usually animated and zesty.
Rembetika clubs offer the Greek
version of urban blues brought to Greece from Asia Minor by refugees in the
1920s.
In these venues one can often enjoy the "ritual" of a
solo dancing, while generally this kind of music is considered a more authentic
form of the Greek entertainment identity. Many Plaka tavernas offer performances
by live folk dancing or music groups with locals often getting up to dance,
inviting foreigners to join in.
As for those who are more into mainstream
Greek and international music and eager to explore the Athenian clubbing scene,
there are numerous places around the city from jazz clubs to dance venues.
